Heart Safe Holland Donates Outdoor AED and Weather-Controlled Cabinet at Holland Ice Rink

HOLLAND, Mich. — Visitors to the Holland Ice Rink now have access to a new outdoor Automated External Defibrillator (AED) housed in a weather-controlled cabinet, thanks to a community partnership focused on saving lives through rapid response to sudden cardiac arrest (SCA).

The AED and specialized outdoor cabinet were donated by Heart Safe Holland through a matching grant partnership with Rotary District 6290 and the Holland After Hours Rotary Club.

The outdoor installation ensures that lifesaving equipment is available year-round for citizens and visitors enjoying the Holland Ice Rink and surrounding downtown area.

Heart Safe Holland is a community initiative dedicated to improving survival rates from sudden cardiac arrest through public education, CPR training, and increased public access to AEDs throughout the Holland area. The organization works to build a safer community by ensuring lifesaving equipment is available where people gather, recreate, and work.

According to the American Heart Association, more than 350,000 out-of-hospital cardiac arrests occur each year in the United States. Sudden cardiac arrest can happen to anyone, regardless of age or fitness level, and survival decreases by approximately 7–10 percent for every minute without CPR and defibrillation. Immediate access to an AED, combined with bystander CPR, can dramatically increase survival rates.

“Quick access to an AED can mean the difference between life and death,” said representatives from Heart Safe Holland and the Holland After Hours Rotary Club. “This project reflects our shared commitment to public safety and community wellness.”

The weather-controlled cabinet protects the AED from Michigan’s harsh winter conditions while allowing emergency access at all times. The installation is the first as Heart Safe Holland works to expand the access to AEDs.
